Tristan McMorran
I'm a multimedia visual artist from Colorado, with experience in a range of materials and media. I grew up in Colorado Springs, spending a lot of time experiencing nature in the mountains, which set an early foundation for my creative style. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, and realized that I needed to pursue visual arts after spending most of my class time in high school drawing landscapes in pencil. I went to school at Colorado Mesa University in the BFA graphic design program. While at CMU, I learned design through a perspective that stressed physical media practice as foundational to design, before moving on to digital tools. So I got to learn media such as oil painting, traditional sign painting, and letterpress printing alongside Adobe and other software. I spent my free time with a circle of art and science oriented friends, as well as exploring the fantastic mountains and canyons of western Colorado, and I spent time on other subjects like philosophy, science, and history, all of which inform the way I practice art and design now.
I got involved with filmmaking near the end of undergraduate studies after helping a friend and a handful of other artists make an indie horror film in five days. Returning to CMU for my final year, I took a number of classes in film and animation, where I connected with new methods of creative expression, technical skills, and talented peers. I focused especially on two dimensional animation and live action film production, and filled a variety of roles on student projects, especially as an assistant director. I also connected with a new network of creatives, and after graduating, worked on small movies in Grand Junction, and moved with some of my classmates and friends to Austin, Texas, to get involved with the film scene there.
After a year in Austin mingling with different people and experiencing a different part of the country, I made the decision to return to Colorado and get back into the graphic design world. For the foreseeable future, I plan to develop professionally in this direction while working on some passion projects in animation (stay tuned for those!)
Central to my work, regardless of media, is an emphasis on good craftsmanship and attention to detail. I love to create things that are as beautiful as they are functional, and I prefer to treat each project as its own unique organism. And I enjoy collaborating with teams as much as I like to work solo, because art is meant to be shared.
I post art and design content semi-regularly on my Instagram and can be contacted any time for any reason through my social media or the contact form on this site!
