Logo refresh + motion design

The Human Complex is a progressive metal band in Colorado. I designed a logo for them early on, and in preparation for a big album release, they asked me to create a new one and handle the design for the album cover with outside artwork.
In our creative brief, we focused on the concept of raw, unprocessed power. We went through a handful of concepts before settling on the “infinity” design. The band wanted to modernize the logo and simplify it for broader application.
I designed the logo by modifying the bold weight of Quasimoda, a typeface designed to hold geometric forms with old-fashioned proportions. I adjusted the letterforms to fit on an implied grid, and brought the C-O ligature out as an identifying mark.
I added motion design to the graphic concept by applying a raster graphics technique of my own invention. I imagined the letterforms being made of some kind of plasma or oscillating energy, and by using blending modes to compress the data of blurred interacting forms, I gave the letterforms their fading effect.
Animated gif of a C to O ligature styled as an infinity sign. The symbol is animated to glow and change, with gaps appearing and disappearing while the whole thing seems to ripple. It is bright white with blue-violet glow over a black background.
